Birthday discounts and occasion codes

· 2026-10-13

What a birthday discount is

A birthday discount is a discount code that a shop sends you around your birthday, usually by email to the address you used to set up a customer account. For this to happen, you need to have given your date of birth at some point, whether when you registered, when you signed up to the newsletter or in your account settings. Without that date, a shop simply cannot send the discount at the right time.

Technically, the code itself is hardly any different from other personalised discount codes. It is linked to your account or email address, usually works only once and expires again after a set period.

Why shops collect birthdays in the first place

For a shop, a birthday discount is an easy way to stay in touch with you without the promotion being tied to a particular season or sale. The occasion is purely personal and comes round reliably every year, which makes it attractive from a marketing point of view as a way to bring you back to the shop, especially if you have not ordered for a while.

How long a code like this usually lasts

Each shop sets its own validity period, but windows of a few days before to a few days after the actual birthday are common. That gives you a bit of leeway if you do not want to, or cannot, shop on the day itself. Once the window has passed, the code usually expires without any further reminder, just like other time-limited promotions.

How to tell whether a birthday discount is on its way

In the account settings of most shops you can check which date of birth is stored, if you no longer remember whether or when you entered it. Some shops even show you there that a code will be waiting for you around your birthday, while others simply surprise you with an email when the time comes. So in the week in question, it is worth looking in the email folder for promotions or offers, in case a message like this lands there rather than in your main inbox.

The important thing is not to mix up the code itself with a general marketing email that happens to arrive in the same week. A genuine birthday discount is usually addressed to you personally and either uses your name or refers specifically to your birthday, while a regular newsletter email arrives around the same time regardless.

A worked example with and without a cap

Say you get a 15% birthday discount and place an order for 60 euros. The discount then comes to 9 euros, and the total drops to 51 euros.

Some birthday discounts are also capped, for example at a maximum saving of 15 euros. If you order for 150 euros in that case, 15% would work out at 22.50 euros on paper, but only the capped 15 euros is actually taken off, so the total is 135 euros rather than 127.50 euros. Whether a cap like this applies is usually also stated in the terms of the code.

What to think about when giving your date of birth

It is up to you whether you store your date of birth with a shop. Many sign-up forms mark this field as optional, even if some shops place it closer to the required fields than it really belongs. If you leave it out, you miss out on a possible birthday discount, but you do not lose any other benefit in your account. If you prefer to be careful with your personal details, you can simply leave the field blank or use an approximate date instead of the exact one, as long as the shop allows it.

Other occasion codes besides birthdays

Besides your own birthday, some shops also use other recurring occasions for a similar discount, such as the anniversary of when you opened your account or placed your first order. The principle stays the same: a personal, usually single-use code triggered by a date the shop has stored about you, not by a general promotion for all customers.

Some shops also send a similar code when you have not ordered for a while, regardless of any fixed date. Strictly speaking, that is not an occasion code in the narrow sense, but for you as the recipient it works in much the same way: a personal code meant to get you shopping again.

Birthday discounts and newsletters often go together

In practice, a birthday discount is often linked to the same newsletter sign-up through which other promotions reach you. Whether signing up to a newsletter is worth it overall, birthday aside, is described in the article Newsletter discount codes. How personalised codes work in general and why they differ from person to person is explained in the article Personalised discount codes. If you also want to save through a points or tier system, you will find an overview in the article Loyalty programmes: what points and tiers get you. Current codes that need no account at all are listed in the coupon overview on daily-coupons.info.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to give my exact date of birth to get a birthday discount?

Usually, yes, because otherwise the shop does not know when to send the code. Some shops, though, only ask for the day and month without the year.

What happens if I do not use the code in time?

It usually expires without any further reminder once the set time window has passed. A new code will then only arrive for your next birthday.

Does a birthday discount apply to the whole order?

That depends on the shop. Some codes apply without restrictions, while others exclude items that are already reduced or are capped at a maximum amount.

Can I combine a birthday discount with other codes?

Each shop decides this for itself, and it is usually stated in the terms right next to the code. Looking at the actual total after entering both codes reliably shows you whether they add up.

Will I get a birthday discount if I only sign up shortly before my birthday?

That depends on how much notice the shop needs to send the code. If you only sign up on the day itself, the automatic send-out for this year may already have happened, and you will only get a code for your next birthday.
